Nothing

Description of the work: (short description)
In my work, I want to use the phenomenon of the tide to reveal the deeper meaning of nothingness and the underlying reef lying dormant in the water. In my work, an island appears that is washed away by the sea and disappears (becomes a reef), then when the water recedes the island is reborn. On a theoretical level, I am interested in the conceptual pairs of "nothing - something" (i.e. non-existent and existing), "matter - medium", "object - context". The scientific approach has much in common with the philosophical formulations, but not everything. The ultimate premise of my own view is that the close relation of nothing to something is crucial. I create something for the expression and representation of nothing. This analogy also allows for this contradictory relationship. The insubstantial according to Kitaro Nishida highlights and brings into focus something more substantial than itself, in much the same way that I construct something in order to speak of nothingness. Nothing and something are meaningless without each other. Without the nothing we can represent the something but without the something we cannot represent the nothing. That is, without something, we cannot create a work about nothing. Nothing is a creative and intellectual basis, a starting point, not the absence of something. Nothing is a possibility to express something. It is a possibility to relate it to something higher. Nothing is a function of meaning. An essential difference.
Longer description:
In my work, I want to use the phenomenon of the tide to reveal the deeper meaning of nothingness and the underlying reef lying dormant in the water. The spiritual predecessor of my work is the furoshiki metaphor written by Kosaka in his book: Nishida Kitaro No Shiso (2002). (Furoshiki is a cloth used for traditional Japanese wrapping.) In its interpretation, furoshiki allows an object to exist as it is placed in the middle of the furoshiki, as if the object is in the spotlight. They can be observed separately, the insubstantial furoshiki and the substantial object within it. The furoshiki can illuminate its object as a void, drawing our attention to the existence, functions and characteristics of the object (i.e. the something).
In my work, an island appears that is washed away by the sea and disappears (becomes a reef), then when the water recedes the island is reborn. (The moment of birth, the creation, the emergence of creativity, the something out of nothing - this is what it symbolizes.) On a theoretical level, I am interested in the conceptual pairs of "nothing - something" (i.e. non-existent and existing), "matter - medium", "object - context". In this sense, the way in which the sea hides and occasionally reveals the reef beneath the water is analogous to the gift wrapped and hidden and then revealed by furoshiki. The tidal phenomenon is a tool in itself, a parallel similar to the furoshiki metaphor, which helps to contextualize something that does not exist. More precisely, it does not exist physically, only conceptually. Nothingness can therefore be presented in other ways, so my work is not concretely and exclusively the presence of nothingness, because nothingness is not a concrete. The birth and disappearance of the island is a permanent, recurrent process due to the phenomenon of the tide.
At the scientific level, nothing equals zero. If we take an empty bottle as an example, the bottle also contains nothingness, you might think. This is not true, however, because science and mathematics do not prove this, but that there is air in the bottle, which is made up of atoms and molecules. But if we look at it from the other side, the representation of negative space (with emptiness) can be a good example in the artistic sense, and can visualise nothingness. The Greek Parmenides states that "nothing cannot exist, because if we speak of something it already exists". Zero is therefore not something that exists, but it is an important factor, since without zero there is no calculation. The universe also starts from zero, so everything is born from zero.
My goals
My aim is to make a name for myself as an independent artist. I achieve this by expanding and researching all the important theoretical and practical knowledge of photography and fine art, which I have been doing for years. As a visual artist, it is important for me to know the world and to explore the future in order to observe the processes around me and to share my impressions and visual stories with the public as a creator. My focus is on multimedia-based art, so I myself like to incorporate new media into my practice. I am particularly interested in experiments and works that combine particular materials with photography and sculpture. My focus is on the existential precariousness of modern man. I am looking for 'bases' and extremes, for the boundaries that define us as human beings, and for boundaries that frame our existence.
